French Farmers close five highways in protest over cattle culling

(MENAFN) Agricultural protests intensified Tuesday in southwestern France, where farmers obstructed traffic on multiple major highways in a continued show of opposition to government and trade policies.
According to reports, at least five highways were blocked as demonstrators expanded their actions across the region. Authorities indicated that additional disruptions could occur later in the day as the protests show no sign of easing.

The demonstrations were not limited to roadways. In the Haute-Garonne area, farmers also halted rail traffic by blocking a railway line, further disrupting transportation networks.

The protest movement has been building for several days, driven largely by anger over official measures that mandate the widespread slaughter of cattle herds following the detection of nodular dermatitis, commonly known as lumpy skin disease.

In addition, farmers are voicing strong opposition to the proposed trade agreement between the European Union and the South American economic bloc comprising Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. They argue that the deal threatens local agriculture by increasing competition and undermining domestic farming standards.
